Pics: What If Earth Had Saturn’s Rings?

We Earthlings love to dream, conjure and extrapolate. If you pose a question such as, “What if Earth had Saturn’s rings?” with all the resources available these days someone will not only answer the question but create some beautiful graphics to depict it!

We saw this amazing graphic posted on reddit of a to-scale depiction of how Earth would look like with Saturn’s rings, and thanks to those who helped find the original source, the original image was created by John Brady at Astronomy Central.

From the Equator you would see a straight light beam perpendicular to the ground, as shown below in Quito, Equador. Further away from the equatorial plane, the rings would become a thicker arch as shown over Guatemala and Washington, D.C. Learn more about why Saturn’s rings formed and what could hypothetically cause the same to have happened on Earth and see what the rings would look like over the Arctic Circle and on the Tropic of Capricorn at i09. Check out a 3d animation version of this proposed phenomenon at the bottom of this post.

This video depicts rings around Earth, but the scale of the rings are not the size of Saturn’s
