Astronomers have observed, in a distant galaxy, a black hole (“woke up” from a period of extended inactivity) swallowed a gigantic celestial body in the neighborhood. Experts say that a similar event could happening soon in our own galaxy.
Space telescopes, recently activated by NASA, determined the first rock “potentially dangerous” for us. The new asteroid was first locate by Space Telescope NEOWISE and was named 2013 YP139. It is currently about 27 million miles from Earth and has a diameter of 640 meters, according to The Telegraph.
The researchers believe that the discovery of Earth 2.0 (a planet very similar to ours) will be possible soon, it is only a matter of time. Dr. Franck Marchis (SETI Institute) has a date for this event. He believes that we will find a planet like ours up to 2024.
A new supernova was discovered recently. Supernova SN 2014J was identified accidentally by a professor and his students (College London) on January 21. It is one of the closest stellar explosion discovered in recent decades. The supernova could reach the maximum light intensity wthin the next two weeks.
A spacecraft sent by NASA to explore the planet Mercury made a discovery which astronomers not expected. Messenger spacecraft mapped for the first time the entire surface of the planet Mercury including areas that had not been seen before.
European’s astronomers have announced the discovery of a planet having the same size as the Earth orbiting in the Alpha Centauris solar system, the nearest “neighbor” star to our planet.
The universe is a place filled up with surprises and things that seem strange to us. However astronomers are hard to impress because they expect to everything including a star into another star.
An international team of astronomers led by the Belgian Vincent Van Eylen (PhD student at danish university Aarhus) discovered, by using NASA’s Kepler telescope, a new extrasolar planet, called Kepler-410A b, lies in the constellation Lyra about 431 light-years away from Earth.
They are impossible to notice, but scientists are convinced that they exist. Black holes are kind of breaks in the textile of space and time that they attract everything that is close at hand. So, nothing escapes, not even light. Scientists believe they have found the specific features of these holes here on Earth, in the southern Atlantic Ocean.
